Nicolette Johnson
I am one of two Visual Arts Teachers at New Hanover High School in Wilmington, NC. I teach Intermediate and Proficient Ceramics, Beginning (Art 1), Proficient (Art 3), Advanced (Art 4), and AP Studio Art. For the 2022-2024 school year, this will be my 10th year at New Hanover High School.
I graduated from UNC-Greensboro with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Art Education with a concentration in Design and Full International and Disciplinary Honors from the Lloyd Honors college. (Tongue-twister, I know.) I couldn't fit in a study abroad experience between strict Education and Honors courses, so I crammed it on to the end of my college career. I lived and studied abroad in Fukuoka, Japan from August to December of 2013. I worked hard for scholarships that covered everything except my passport, half my rent, and personal expenses (like food.) I like to tell students about this so that they know they can see the world if they work hard for it. I completed my Masters of Art Education from East Carolina University in May of 2023 with a thesis on digital art portfolios.
I love Art for its ability to improve a person's life as well as enhance those aspects that already make a person great. As a designer, I am interested in personal narrative art. My work explores idiosyncratic approaches to contemporary concerns such as childhood and companionship. Favorite media include ceramics and tissue paper sculptures, but I am known to adapt to available and relevant materials. Helping my students grow and achieve their own artistic goals remains a primary concern.
I am in the building at least between 8am to 4pm. I'm often running around for errands or hosting the Art Club. I don't often carry my phone, so I am only able to answer email at the computer in my classroom, but it is the surest way to contact me:

I look forward to this year of learning and Art,
Nicolette Johnson
